Experts recognise that taking care of our appearance as we grow older can have a hugely positive effect on our self-esteem, helping people to experience ageing differently, in a more positive way.

As cosmetic science enhances our understanding of how our bodies age, new products are being created that are right at the cutting edge of biological understanding. But can skin science really bring physiological as well as psychological benefits?

The CTPA has explored this with a range of experts and captured some of their views here.


What is the legacy of sun damage?

Dr Emma Meredith, Director-General at CTPA, and Professor Birch-Machin, Professor of Molecular Dermatology, Newcastle Biomedicine, discuss sunburnt DNA and how to be sun safe, setting out how skin damage that can occur from sun exposure over time, and how sun protection works to prevent this.

Nanotechnology and its role in sunscreen

Dr Chris Flower, Former Director-General of CTPA, and Professor Mark Birch-Machin, Professor of Molecular Dermatology, Newcastle Biomedicine, explore the science of the very small - nanotechnology. They explain what the term means, and how nanomaterials are safely used in cosmetic product.
